Within its 125 square kilometre area, the Municipality of Ormea offers numerous opportunities for excursions, retracing the old mule-tracks which once connected the scattered villages to the town. There are also the old salt ways which were used as trade routes for this precious merchandise across the mountain passes.
There are many activities organized by the Ormea CAI department during the year.
The main routes are divided into low valley, middle valley and high valley.
The low valley can be easily traversed, thanks to a 30-kilometre cycle path which connects Ponte di Nava, Ormea and Priola and passes through some beautiful, unspoilt countryside.
The Torre dei Saracenie and the Balma del Messere.
The middle valley is well worth exploring, by means of the Balconata di Ormea which passes through all the little villages on the left side of the Tanaro River. It is also connects to the valley bottom by many small paths, allowing you to cover all 40 kilometres in a few days.
The high valley is suitable for those who are a bit better trained, because it consists of the high slopes of the Ligurian Alps, which rise more than 2600 metres above sea-level.
